BARF stands for either Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods, or sometimes Bones And Raw Food. It’s a way of feeding dogs and cats advocated by the Australian vet Dr. Ian Billinghurst, among others, after many years observing his own dogs and his many patients.

He concluded that the healthiest animals were those that ate a diet as close as possible to that of their wild ancestors, wolves and big cats: raw meat, importantly includingthe bones, along with vegetable matter foraged or sourced from the stomach contents of their prey.

This provided them with a diet rich in essential minerals such as the calcium needed for building teeth and bones; and vitamins, natural enzymes and antioxidants often destroyed in cooking or lacking in many commercial and processed products.
