Feeding your Pets

Our meat is cut relatively small in order to avoid small dogs from choking. Since dogs usually swallow their food instead of chewing, larger pieces of meat for large dogs are not necessary and would not improve their eating pleasure.

In case of feeding supplements (rice, vegetables), soak them in warm water for 2-3 minutes, then mix with the meat or offal. Food should be served at room temperature. Fresh water must always be accessible.

If necessary, additional vitamins / minerals can also be mixed in. For quantities always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Adding pure vegetable oil (unsaturated fatty acids) can support a strong healthy coat and improve digestion. A boiled egg with crushed shell every two or three days provides many additional vitamins, trace elements and calcium - this also has the welcome side effect of a glossy coat. Raw eggs should be fed with caution because of the negative effect of the raw egg white. A lot of dogs like pears and apples, there is no objection to these treats occasionally. Also great for looking after their teeth are chewy treats. Please be aware that some of these treats are can be quite high in fat, therefore one treat a day is sufficient.

Unsuitable dog foods

As with humans, it is also important for dogs to pay attention to proper nutrition. Too many dog owners act according to the fallacy that what is tasteful for us humans is also tasty for dogs. In many cases it is a regrettable fact that a large part of human food is at best partially suitable for dogs. Here are some examples:

Processed Cat food for dogs
Contrary to popular belief, cat food has no place on a dog’s menu. It is unsuitable for dogs because of its high content of protein. Caution should also be taken when feeding raw eggs, as the egg white can block protein digestion of the dog.

Raw pork meat as dog food
Raw pork poses a great danger to dogs, because it may hide the deadly (for dogs) Aujetzky Virus. In case of feeding pork, please ensure it is thoroughly cooked, or avoid it all together. The same goes for raw potatoes, which contain toxic solanine, and can cause severe diarrhoea and nausea.

Sweets for dogs
Coffee and chocolate are a total NO NO for dogs. They contain toxins leading to severe poisoning, which could result in heart failure. Please always ensure that these are kept far away from dogs.

Fruit as dog food
Feeding fruit is controversial as it can cause intestinal obstructions. We only recommend feeding fruit occasionally. Your dog enjoying the odd apple or pear in moderation is fine.

Prepared cold meat
Dogs should avoid eating any processed cold meats. Cold meats are usually highly refined with salt and other spices to give us humans a nicer taste, but dog’s stomachs often don’t tolerate it. On top of this, prepared cold meat is usually very high in fat, which can lead to your dog becoming overweight if not closely monitored.
